Many thanks for the invitation and for giving me the opportunity to address this distinguished audience. I am not for the first time in Chicago. It is also not for the first time that I am attending a conference organized by the Heartland Institute. But it is for the first time I am with Heartland here in Chicago.

Mr. Rector, members of the Mont Pelerin Society, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to thank you for the invitation. Being here is very inspiring and motivating for me. I have never been to Morocco and to this part of the world before and already my first hours here indicate that it will be an unforgettable visit. And a learning process. The first MPS regional meeting in Africa is a great, almost revolutionary event. Let me use this opportunity to say how honoured we, the Czechs, are to host the MPS 2012 General Meeting in Prague in September this year.

Robert Nef is – without doubt – one of the last classical liberals. There are, of course, many other people in Europe who are convinced that they are anti-communists or anti-socialists, who would insist that they are pro-market and pro-democracy but we know that they are far from being true believers in freedom and free markets and we know as well that they are not active and loud defenders of the classical liberal principles so dear to Robert Nef (and me).

We have gathered here today at this historic place in the heart of Prague Castle to pay our respect to Václav Havel, who passed away on Sunday, 18 December, following a long and difficult illness, yet he passed away unexpectedly. We have gathered in the Vladislav Hall, where Václav Havel was first elected and inaugurated as President twenty two years ago. There is not a more appropriate place in our country where to bid him farewell.
