Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, It is a great pleasure for me and for my wife to welcome you here at the Prague Castle on the occasion of the Czech National Day. We are pleased and honored that also this year His Excellency, the Apostolic Nuncio, will speak to us on behalf of the diplomatic corps. Mr. Ambassador, you have been traditionally adding a spiritual dimension to this festive occasion.

Mr. Rector, Professors, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, It is a great pleasure to be here and a great honour to receive the honorary doctorate from your University. As a politician, as President of the Czech Republic who is on an official state visit to your country and as a professor at the Prague School of Economics, I am aware of the importance of academic institutions and universities. It is my world. That is the main reason why I so highly appreciate the opportunity to address such esteemed academic audience.

I live in Europe and care about democracy and sovereignty of nation states there. That is why I wrote the book “Europe: The Shattering of Illusions” to be published by Bloomsbury on September 27. We witness a growing tendency of the EU institutions, especially of the unelected Commission, to make decisions about most of the issues of our lives. I resolutely oppose this development as undemocratic.

Mr. Chairman, I would like to congratulate you on your election to serve as the highest representative of the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly. In recent decades your country has gone through a difficult period and I am sure your experience as Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs, who saw the consequences of one kind of “peacefully” negotiated settlements and of armed international interventions, will be beneficial for this year’s General Assembly and will contribute to making our deliberations less formal and more practical.

The new push for a European Union federation, complete with its own head of state and army, is the "final phase" of the destruction of democracy and the nation state. "Two-faced" politicians, including the Conservatives, have opened the door to an EU superstate by giving up on democracy, in a flight from accountability and responsibility to their voters.

I already had a chance to say earlier this week how pleased I am and we all are to host the Mont Pelerin Society General Meeting here in Prague. I hope you have been enjoying your stay. More then 20 years ago, two years after the fall of communism in this country and this part of the world, we had here the MPS Regional Meeting, in which some of you participated.

Many thanks for the invitation to attend your conference and to speak here. I appreciate that a mere politician, a former economist, has been invited to address this well-known gathering of highly respected scientists. If I understand it correctly, this year´s seminar is devoted to the discussion of the role of science and of “planetary emergencies”. To the first topic, I want to say very clearly that I don´t see a special role for science which would be different from doing science.

Many thanks for the invitation to this very serious gathering. I just returned from a week long state visit to Malaysia and Indonesia, from two fast growing countries. This trip reinforced my feeling that there is no other topic worth discussing at meetings like this one than Europe and its economic fate. Let me, therefore, use this opportunity to say a few words about how I see it.

Mr. Ambassador, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, thank you for inviting me and all of us to celebrate the Independence Day of the United States of America with you and for giving me the opportunity to say a few words on this occasion. This is the last time I am attending this celebration as the President of the Czech Republic and would like, therefore, to speak a little more broadly about the Czech-American relations.

Many thanks for giving me a chance to come again to this very beautiful but also (as seen from Prague) very remote part of the world. Nevertheless, I strongly believe that I will be highly rewarded for the long journey by being here with all of you. Thank you for selecting this topic for the conference. Its title suggests the lack of politically correctness but it magnifies my pleasure to be here. I am proud to belong to the very small group of people who consider both the ideology of global governance and the reality of the rapidly accelerating realization of this scheme to be one of the main threats to our liberty and democracy.
