1. My first Ditchley Park Conference was really in Ditchley Park. It was in October 1990, almost 16 years ago. When I look at it now, it was, in many respects, a different era.

Thank you for giving me a chance to speak here this morning. I accepted the invitation to take part in this introductory panel even though I am rather reluctant to discuss global, cosmic, universal – more or less undefined or indefinable – topics, as it usually is a way of escaping the real issues we see around us and can, at least potentially, do something about.

I must say that I have a problem with the American understanding of the European integration. What I usually find here is the unstructured and unanalytical pro-integrationist argumentation by politicians and influential commentators which bothers me. It is not in my interests, and – I suppose – it is not in the interest of this country either.

1. Many thanks for inviting me to say a few words here. There are many topics to talk about but it seemes to me that here, in Turkey, the most appropriate topic is the European Union, and especially its potential future enlargement.
