As is well known, President of the United States George Bush will pay a short working visit to the Czech Republic today and tomorrow. He was here once already – during the Prague NATO Summit in 2002. Although our contacts with the USA have been very intensive in the last years and our relations are surely very good, this visit undoubtedly is an extraordinary event.

Dear attendants,
We came together, 62 years after the ending of the most dreadful war in the history of mankind and the liberation of the Terezín ghetto, to commemorate – as we do each year – the unfathomable human suffering that occurred here, and that – despite the passage of time - has not faded and remained a symbol of this place.

Dear Rose, Mr. President, Distinguished Members of the University of Chicago Faculty, Ladies and Gentlemen,
it is a great honor for me to be with all of you here today, especially with Rose. Nevertheless, I am not sure I deserve to be privileged to be one of the speakers on this very special occasion, because I did not have the chance to be a long time colleague or a close personal friend of Milton Friedman.

It is a great honour for me and for all of us to be here. I would like to thank you for the invitation to visit your beautiful country and for the very warm welcome I, my wife and my delegation are receiving here. I see this visit as truly historic because it is the very first visit of the President of the Czech Republic to this most significant country of the African continent.
