Letter to the President of the U.S.A.

English Pages, 1. 4. 2003

                                                 Prague, March 31, 2003

Dear Mr. President,

Thank you for your warm and friendly letter from March 24.

I want to assure you of my long-standing personal friendship toward the United States. On countless occasions I have expressed my admiration for America's conservative values and its committment to the cause of liberty. I have always held in high regard the pragmatism and efficiency of American people and their genuine optimism.

In these testing times the value of friendship is reflected not only in friend's words but especially in his deeds. Regarding the Iraqi crisis I have consistently expressed a position identical with the Czech government's view, which the Parliament expressed by adopting its resolution. The Czech Republic takes part in the Operation Enduring Freedom, and our troops are on the ground in Kuwait ready to take humanitarian action if weapons of mass destruction are used. This stance, about which you are surely aware, is also supported by a majority of Czech people.

I am glad that you consider the Czech Republic to be a strong member of NATO, defender of peace and freedom in the world. I am proud of being - as you say - a trusted friend of the United States and its leadership. Please be assured that these are integral parts of my presidential program, because I will always be on the side of those who oppose dictartorship and terrorism.

I wish you personally as well as your government and the American people good luck in these trying times.

Sincerely,

Václav Klaus
