Vaše Svatosti,

dovolte mi, abych Vás zde v Praze a v celé České republice co nejsrdečněji přivítal jménem svým, jménem své manželky i jménem celé české veřejnosti. Jsme velmi rádi, že jste k nám přijel. Toho, že jste přijal pozvání k této návštěvě jak od českého státu, tak od České biskupské konference, si velmi vážíme. 

Dovolte mi, abych stejně srdečně přivítal všechny členy Vašeho doprovodu a popřál Vám všem příjemný a na zážitky bohatý pobyt v naší zemi.

V minulosti byla univerzálním mezinárodním jazykem latina, dnes je jím angličtina. Dovolte mi proto, abych – s ohledem na naše hosty – pokračoval anglicky:

Your Holiness, 

It is for the fourth time over the last twenty years that we welcome the highest representative of the Catholic Church in our country, in the Czech Republic. Your predecessor, Pope John Paul II, came to Prague for the first time already in the year 1990, not long after the collapse of the totalitarian communist regime in our country and in our part of Europe. His other visits were also in many respects symbolic and memorable.

Your Holiness, 

We see the same degree of importance and symbolism in your today’s visit. You are visiting us at the time when we commemorate the twenty-year anniversary of the historic changes that were of such fundamental importance not only for the Czech Republic and Europe as a whole, but also for the Churches in our country.

I very well remember our short meeting during your inauguration in Saint Peter’s Basilica in April 2005 and especially our most interesting and inspiring talks in May this year in Vatican. I dare say that our views on many issues of today’s complicated world and also on many problems of our continent are close, that they are founded on similar principles and positions, even though we came to them from different philosophical or scientific concepts.

Your Holiness, 

I know that you understand our country. You are also well known to the Czech people – although until this day primarily through your sermons, speeches, books and articles. We are also pleased to finally have in Czech language your last encyclical Caritas in Veritate, which was published here a few days ago.

When we welcome you here, we’re welcoming not only the Head of the Vatican City State and the leader of the Catholic Church. With you, we’re welcoming one of the world’s most distinguished intellectual and spiritual authorities. Someone, who ensures that the values our civilization has been based upon for more than two millennia won’t be lost in our contemporary turbulent world. 

Your visit is taking place at the time when we commemorate our national patron – Saint Wenceslas. When I stopped at his altar in the Saint Peter’s Basilica in May this year, I was pleased to see that his importance goes well beyond the borders of the Czech state.

Vaše Svatosti,

v rámci svého bohatého programu navštívíte i další významná místa, která jsou spojena s dějinami naší země. Vaše první zastávka na cestě z letiště vede do kostela Panny Marie Vítězné, který je domovem slavného Pražského Jezulátka, navštěvovaného poutníky z celého světa. Zítra zavítáte do Brna, metropole Moravy a v pondělí Vás budeme vítat v místě mučednické smrti sv. Václava.
