Polemikou o tzv. globálním oteplování se zabývám už dvě desetiletí. Patřím mezi veterány této disciplíny. Napsal jsem na toto téma desítky článků, pronesl spoustu projevů (na všech kontinentech) a vydal o tom tři knihy. Jedna z nich byla přeložena do 18 jazyků. Místo toho, abych se pokusil zřetelně a jasně shrnout jejich hlavní poselství sám, dovolím si místo toho použít formulaci slavného britského autora Paula Johnsona, který před několika lety naprosto výstižně řekl, že víra v člověkem způsobené globální oteplování (nyní eufemisticky nazývaném klimatická změna) je „světonázor, že je to dogma, které má s vědou jen málo společného“.

It’s great to be in Cap Ferrat. The beauty of this place remains unchanged in spite of all the dramatic events in the world since 2016, when I was privileged to be here for the first and only time. 

It is also encouraging to see our host, Tito Tettamanti, in such a good shape. While all of us are getting older, he remains the same. Not just physically. His mind is as sharp, as we have known it for decades. The small book he sent me as 2025 New Year’s greetings “Confessioni di un conservatore” proves this quite persuasively. Even my poor Italian made it possible for me to appreciate it.

Notes for Karpacz 2025: Should We – and Eventually Can We – Do Anything with Climate?

I have been engaged in the climate debate already for at least two decades. I belong among the veterans of this debate. I have written dozens of articles, made speeches all over the world (on all continents) and published three books on this topic. One of them has been translated into 18 languages. Rather than summarizing their main message myself, let me use a formulation made by the highly esteemed British author Paul Johnson, who famously said that the belief in man-made global warming (now euphemistically called climate change) is “a creed, a faith, a dogma that has little to do with science”.

I would like to thank the representatives of the Karpacz Economic Forum for organizing the presentation of this book of mine here. Most of my books are, of course, written in Czech. For this occasion, I chose to present my English collection of articles and speeches, which was published in Prague in the spring of 2025. These texts were written in English over the past three years. The included speeches were delivered at conferences in 10 European countries, from Portugal to Turkey, from Budapest to Vienna.

Jsme zhruba měsíc před jedenáctými polistopadovými volbami. O čem podle vás jsou? A o čem by měly být?

To jsou dvě odlišné věci. Před čtyřmi lety jsme ve stejnou chvíli a v téměř stejné sestavě autorů vydali podobný sborník jako ten letošní. Jmenoval se „Volby '21 – Budou o něčem?“ Byli jsme tehdy pesimističtí a měli pocit, že odpověď je „ne“. Náš závěr po čtyřech letech je, že tam sice seděli jiní pánové a pár dam, ale v podstatě k žádnému průlomu, který považujeme za nesmírně potřebný, nedošlo. Jestli jsme v novém sborníku optimisté, nebo pesimisté, že ke změně dojde právě teď? Každý sice argumentujeme různými způsoby, vnímáme, co se všechno posunulo, ale máme obavu, že k žádnému průlomu nedojde.

Many thanks for the invitation to the Karpacz Economic Forum 2025. This Forum is undoubtedly the largest conference of its kind in our region, that is, in Central Europe. To my great regret, we don’t have anything similar in my country, in the Czech Republic. There are several reasons for this, but the most important one is that Poland has a foreign policy and is, therefore, able to have its own views and political stances.

Poslední prázdninový víkend trávím tradičně se ženou v jejím rodném městě – krušnohorských Kraslicích, kde se v tu dobu koná tradiční jarmark. Nejinak tomu bylo i letos. Kraslice a tamější kraj, kam jezdím už více než 40 let, jsem si zvláštním způsobem zamiloval. Nádherná krušnohorská příroda, drsné a studené klima a jakási nostalgie, zadumanost a podivné tajemno prostupují tuto krajinu na samých německých hranicích.

Sehr geehrter Pater Prior Justinus, sehr geehrter Pater Buchmaier, sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, 

vielen Dank für Ihre Einladung zu diesem Forum. Es hat mir die einzigartige Gelegenheit gegeben, das Stift Vyšší Brod (Hohenfurth) zum ersten Mal in meinem Leben zu besuchen. Ich schäme mich, dass ich hier, in diesem weltberühmten Kloster, noch nie gewesen bin. In Südböhmen, wo meine Familie seit mehreren Jahrzehnten ein altes Landhaus besitzt, bin ich relativ oft. Vielen Dank für diese Gelegenheit.
